The pH scale measures how acidic something is. The scale runs from 0-14, with a lower number indicating more acidity and a higher number indicating more bases. Water is a solution, so the pH level should be neutral, or 7 on the scale. If that number is lower than 7, yielding more acidic water results, this can be harmful.
Pollution is the usual cause of acidic water, usually in the form of carbon dioxide or acid rain. If your water source is close to a factory or mining center, it’s more likely that your water will have a low pH level.
If you notice a metallic taste to your water, acidity could be to blame. Other signs include blue-green staining around faucets and drains.
Acidic water can eat away at iron or copper piping, causing damage to your entire water system.
