Iron

Iron is a naturally occurring element that can be found everywhere. While it makes up 5% of the earth’s crust, it does not belong in your drinking water. A metallic taste and smell to your water is an easy way to detect iron in it. You may also notice rust stains on your sinks and toilets.

There are two different types of iron that can be found in water:

  1. Ferrous iron, which is clear when coming out of the tap, but turns red or brown in color once it settles.
  2. Ferric iron, which has a yellow-red color as it comes out of the tap, and is also known as “red water iron”.

The contamination process begins during the natural water cycle. When water comes into contact with rocks bearing iron, that iron is then brought all the way throughout the rest of the process and into your home.

Iron in your water supply can affect the function of many things in your home, including showerheads and faucets. Iron can collect in the mouth of faucets, thereby clogging them. It can also clog water pipes, which can cause flow inefficiency and your water usage bills to rise.

We at Mel's Water/CIMS Water Solutions recommend either a specialty filter or a water softener as your best solution for iron in your water. Our experts can pinpoint the issue and help you choose the right option. Contact us today to get started.
